When you think of coffee cake, what comes to your mind?
Entenmann's.
I won't lie to you - when I was little, even still now sometimes, a lot of Entenmann's sweet treats are my guilty pleasures. But, I have two problems with these treats that made me want to try making my own. Both of which, didn't really bother me until I got older:
Too sweet
I get terrible stomach aches about 4 hours later
Both of these are very uncomfortable and not worth the treat for me. So, here we are - making a homemade coffee cake that is just the right amount of sweetness and no preservatives.
I don't know about you, but when I eat a cinnamon swirl coffee cake, I'm like a little kid. I like to slice it to the middle between the swirl and then eat it. To ensure a taste of cinnamon is in each bite, in most coffee cakes, you will only see cinnamon in the swirl and the topping. But, in mine, ground cinnamon is in the cake itself to make sure you have a hint in each bite.

The topping of a coffee cake is like a guilty pleasure because it's usually the sweetest part. The topping of this cake is actually the exact same as the swirl. This is to try and not mix up too many tastes/textures in one bite. With the swirl and topping the same, the sugars melt throughout the cake and make it so delicious.
Top finish the topping, I have two options depending on if you want more sweetness or just a hint.
Powdered sugar - by sifting powdered sugar on top, it adds a simple garnish and just hint of sweetness. I personally prefer this because I want to savor the cinnamon.
Icing - when I add icing to this cake, I don't cover it entirely. I take a spoon and do a quick drizzle on top. This option is sweeter than using only powdered sugar.
Again, it is all based on preference and both can be accommodated!
These cakes can be enjoyed at room temperature or warmed up with a hot cup of tea. Enjoy for breakfast or a 3pm pick me up.
