Cream puffs, to me at least, are one of the greatest finger held desserts. You don't need a fork, a spoon, a knife, or even a plate if you don't want. You just pick it up and eat it. & they're just so cute.
It's truly underrated. So, here we go to sharing my absolutely amazing and crave fulfilling cream puffs!
To start, the pastry dough is actually fun to make and fascinating to see how to bakes in the oven. The dough is a simple mixture of flour and butter. You will take some unsalted butter and melt it in a sauce pot. Once it's melted, the flour is added to thicken the mixture.

To be truthful, when you're making the dough, you will most definitely not think much of it. It doesn't have an aroma and it looks sticky.
But, TRUST ME here, this dough expands in the oven and the butter adds such a creamy taste that balances out the filling flawlessly.
Okay, so using a piping bag, the dough will be piped into circles. Keep in mind that the dough expands quite dramatically. For me, as you already may know, I'm about the bakery sized items. I didn't shape the dough to make the mini cream puffs, I piped them about 1/2 inch so that it expanded into a larger cream puff.
To explain, watch this video:
For the filling - which let's not deny, is the best part, some recipes use a whipped cream. But, I decided to use a pastry creme filling instead. The difference, mostly, is that whipped cream uses heavy cream whereas pastry creme has an egg yolk base instead. Pastry creme, in my opinion, is similar in texture and taste to a vanilla pudding versus a whipped topping.
Again, it all based on preference. If you prefer whipped cream, you can do that. If you prefer the pastry creme, you can do that as well. For either option, just be sure to let the filling cool in the fridge before piping in into your cream puff.
Check out this video for the pastry creme:
Now that I think of it, it could be a great idea to try themed like cream puffs. For instance, a peppermint flavored cream filling for the winter and a cider spiced cream for the fall.
Hmmm... I'll DEFINITELY get back to you on that!
When it comes time to selling these lovely puffs [hopefully soon!], I can give the option to sell the shells and the filling separately, if you'd like to have a family or girl's night activity to fill them together and the option to buy them already prepared!
